Donen galt als einer der wichtigsten Regisseure des Filmmusicals; er drehte Filmklassiker wie "Singin' in the Rain" und "Charade". Für sein Lebenswerk erhielt er 1998 den Ehrenoscar sowie 2004 den Goldenen Löwen.
