Januar 2021 gestorben. Sie galt als eine der führenden afroamerikanischen Schauspielerinnen ihrer Generation und legte Wert auf vielschichtige Charakterrollen, als diese für schwarze Frauen nicht selbstverständlich waren. Sie wurde unter anderem mit einem Ehren-Oscar, einem Tony Award, drei Emmy Awards, der Presidential Medal of Freedom und dem Kennedy-Preis geehrt.*
