DER BELGISCH-SCHWEIZERISCHE MULTIINSTRUMENTALIST JOËL VANDROOGENBROECK IST GESTORBEN

04.01.2020 Der am 25. August 1938 in Brüssel geborene Multiinstrumentalist, Komponist und Produzent Joël Vandroogenbroeck (Bild) ist am 23. Dezember 2019 in Arlesheim gestorben. Besondere Bekanntheit erlangte er als Gründer und Mitglied der Gruppe Brainticket, die heute noch international Kultstatus geniesst. Vandroogenbroeck hatte seit 1961 einen engen Bezug zur Schweizer Rock-, Jazz- und E-Musikszene; er arbeitete u.a. mit Bruno Spoerri, Polo Hofer, Peter Giger, Alex Bally, Marc Hellman, Isla Eckinger, Andy Scherrer, Franco Ambrosetti, Oscar Klein oder Mario Schneeberger zusammen. Am 15. Februar 2020 findet in Basel eine Gedenkfeier für Freunde und Bekannte von Joël Vandroogenbroeck statt (Kontakt: abbuehlvandroo@gmx.ch).

Joël Vandroogenbroeck studierte in seiner Heimatstadt Klavier, um dann Mitte der 1950er-Jahre mit der Band von Jacques Pelzer auf Tournee zu gehen. Dann spielte er mit René Thomas, Bobby Jaspar, Barney Wilen und Zoot Sims. Mit Eje Thelin konzertierte er längere Zeit in Schweden und trat 1964 auf dem Jazzfestival Frankfurt auf. Nach Studien in indischer und balinesischer Musik war er in den RCA-Studios in Rom als Arrangeur, Komponist und Solist beschäftigt, bevor er als Theatermusiker nach Basel ging, wo er auch mit Oscar Klein, Franco Ambrosetti und Andy Scherrer auftrat. 1968 gründete er die experimentelle Rockgruppe Brainticket, die mit rudimentären elektronischen Instrumenten improvisierte und eine Italientournee unternahm. Einer zweiten Ausgabe der Band gehörten 1980 neben ihm Hans Deyssenroth und Willy Seefeldt an. Daneben verfasste Vandroogenbroeck Filmmusik und nahm eine Reihe von Platten für das Label Coloursound auf; später schrieb er auch Chor- und Ballettmusik. Zwischen 1980 und 1985 arbeitete er im Duo mit Bruno Spoerri daran, elektronische Musik und akustischen Jazz zu verbinden; daneben trat er mit Mario Schneeberger auf.

Vandroogenbroeck's musical journey spanning two-thirds of a century took him from his birthplace Belgium to what was then the Belgian Congo in Africa, where he played bass for a jazz group; to Italy, where he rubbed shoulders with local luminaries such as Ennio Morricone and Mussolini's son; to Bali, where he immersed himself in the mastering of traditional instruments such as the gamelan and joged bumbung - which led to his founding of the Joged Bumbung Band in Switzerland.

"The vibration of the soul"

I personally liked the contrast between heavy electric rock and the soft and quiet moods of nature and natural archaic instruments. One may say that I liked to look backwards to the roots of music ... I wanted to know what the music sounded like in Atlantis, ancient Africa, Egypt and Mesopotamia - stuff far behind our times. I always thought the vibration of a string, of a skin, of a wind instrument made one sometimes discover the vibration of the soul.
