Renbourn's manager, Dave Smith, who worked with him for about 25 years, described him as a "delight". "He was just larger than life. Game for anything. He was just finishing off a tour with Wizz Jones - and was looking forward to the next. He was a great teacher - he was always putting himself down as a teacher and running weekend workshops all over Europe, where he would have students come and learn from him."

Renbourn, along with Bert Jansch, Jacqui McShee, Terry Cox, and Danny Thompson, founded Pentangle in 1968. They released several albums, such as 1968's The Pentangle, 1969's Basket of Light, and 1970's Cruel Sister.

Pentangle disbanded in 1972. Before and after his time in the band, Renbourn had a prolific solo career as a guitarist and vocalist. He received Grammy nominations for his work with the John Renbourn Group, and for his collaboration with the Incredible String Band's Robin Williamson. Renbourn wasn't a part of Pentangle's reunion in the 1980s, but in 2007, he appeared with the band as they received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

During the 1980s, he received Grammy nominations for 1981's Live In America with the John Renbourn Group, and Wheel Of Fortune, his 1983 collaboration with the Incredible String Band's Robin Williamson.

His last studio album was 2011's Palermo Snow.

KOLLEGEN UND FREUNDE VERABSCHIEDEN SICH

So very sad to hear of the passing of the great British guitarist, John Renbourn. I met him in his Pentangle days and several times through the years. I had the pleasure of his company for about a week in 2001 when we taught some workshops together at a guitar camp in California, where I took this photo. I didn't see him nearly enough in the years that followed, but I have admired his playing and musicianship for decades and had always hoped to spend more time with him. A great loss.

Good-bye John Renbourn, it was a pleasure meeting you over the years. You were a wonderful human being towards me when I was a complete nobody and nothing changed years later when we played the same festival.

RIP John! One of my earliest guitar heroes, member or groundbreaking folk crossover group Pentangle, duo partner with Bert Jansch, who led the folk music renaissance in the 60s and never looked back. I had the good fortune to get to know him, host him at my home, and tour with him in England and the U.S. Thank you John for all you've given us!!!

Just back from my concert at Stargazer's in Colorado Springs, I just found out about the passing of John Renbourn. Huge emotion and sadness ... John was one of my biggest inspirations and also a dear friend. I remember that one month long tour we did together in the US some years ago. He was such a gentleman and sweet road companion, with plenty of stories to share. A musical monument has left this earth. Thank you and RIP, dearest John, you'll be for ever remembered.
