DER BRITISCHE SÄNGER GERRY MARSDEN ("YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE") IST GESTORBEN

03.01.2021 Der am 24. September 1942 in Liverpool geborene britische Sänger, Musiker, Komponist und Fernsehmoderator Gerry Marsden (Bild) ist am 3. Januar 2021 in Birkenhead gestorben. The Sun Catch You Crying".

Gerry Marsden obituary

With his toothy grin and cheeky manner, Gerry Marsden, who has died aged 78, was one of the prime movers of the Merseybeat sound of the early 1960s. For a time, Marsden's band, Gerry and the Pacemakers, were vying with the Beatles as Britain's top pop group, both of them part of Brian Epstein's Liverpool-based management stable.

Between March and October of 1963 the first three Gerry and the Pacemakers singles - "How Do You Do It?", "I Like It" and the soon-to-be ubiquitous football anthem taken from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Carousel - all topped the British charts.

Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney said Gerry And The Pacemakers were his band's "biggest rivals on the local scene", adding: "You'll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Cross the Mersey remain in many people's hearts as reminders of a joyful time in British music."

While Gerry and the Pacemakers' string of singles topped the British charts, the Merseybeat band impacted American charts with their 1964 hit "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," which the band played on the Ed Sullivan Show three months after the Beatles' historic February 1964 performance. Their next single, "Ferry Cross the Mersey," also became a top 10 hit in the U.S.

Marsden formed Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1959 with his brother Fred, Les Chadwick and Arthur McMahon, who was replaced by Les Maguire in 1961. They went on to rival the Beatles in their early career, playing similar venues in Hamburg and Liverpool.

Weitere Hits der Gruppe waren "How Do You Do It?" und "I Like It"
