06.12.2018 Der am 17. April 1955 in Leigh geborene englische Sänger, Songwriter und Gitarrist Pete Shelley (Bild) ist am 6. Dezember 2018 in Estland gestorben. Bekannt wurde er als Sänger und Gitarrist der Punk-Band Buzzcocks und durch seine anschliessende Solokarriere.

Buzzcocks singer Pete Shelley dies at 63
BBC music correspondent Lizo Mzimba said Buzzcocks, who formed in Bolton in the 1970s, were regarded as more polished, but musically no less influential, than the Sex Pistols.
The band have tweeted saying Shelley was "one of the UK's most influential and prolific songwriters and co-founder of the seminal original punk band Buzzcocks".

Speaking in 2006 about his views on music, Shelley told the Guardian: "I'm not interested in being able to play. A musician is like another brand of entertainer.
"There are plenty of musicians that I enjoy watching that are entertainers. But I wouldn't want to be that, because the thing with an entertainer is that there is always that dishonesty, which is what punk tried to get rid of.

Punk pioneer
The Buzzcocks stood alongside the Clash and the Sex Pistols as pioneers of British punk. Shelley and Howard Devoto formed the band in 1975, and after Devoto left, Shelley took over as the lead singer and songwriter, his melodic sneer pairing perfectly with the Buzzcocks' breakneck guitar attack.
