Of all the fascinating musical offshoots that sprang from mid-70s punk rock, the Fall proved the strangest and most durable. The group was a vehicle for the singer and lyricist Mark E Smith, who has died aged 60 after an extended period of ill health, including respiratory problems.

Neben den zahlreichen Alben von The Fall veröffentlichte er zwei Spoken-Word Projekte: The Post-Nearly Man und Pander! Panda! Panzer! 2007 erschien in Zusammenarbeit mit Mouse on Mars unter dem Bandnamen Von Südenfed das Album Tromatic Reflexxions.

Mit seiner 1977 gegründeten Post-Punk-Band The Fall wurde er zur Ikone der Subkultur. Manchen galt sie sogar als "beste Band aller Zeiten". Smith war allerdings auch für seinen Sarkasmus berüchtigt.

Der Beeinflusser

The Fall beeinflusste viele bekannte Musiker der vergangenen Jahrzehnte. Die deutsche Rockband Tocotronic widmete dem Sänger 1996 den Song "Ich habe geträumt, ich wäre Pizza essen mit Mark E. Smith".
