Bergonzi was a singer who might not have been as successful in today's opera world. On stage, he looked awkward, his physical acting of the grand-gesture, extend-your-arms variety. There was plenty of acting, however, in his voice: all of the tenderness and warmth and ardor in the world rang out in a sound that was at once golden and caressing, with a characteristic liquid slurring over the consonants, a slight lisp that emphasized the smoothness of the legato line.

Considered the foremost Verdi tenor of his age, Mr. Bergonzi sang more than 300 times with the Metropolitan Opera of New York from the 1950s to the '80s, appearing opposite a roster of celebrated divas that included Maria Callas, Risë Stevens, Victoria de los Angeles and Leontyne Price.

There was no finer interpreter of Donizetti's, Verdi's and Puccini's tenor roles throughout his long career than Carlo Bergonzi, who has died aged 90. His singing of all three composers' music evinced an innate sense of how to mould an immaculate line projected on a long breath, an exemplary clarity of diction, and an authoritative use of the particular style called for in interpreting a role.
