11.01.2020 Der am 12. September 1952 in Hamilton (Ontario) geborene kanadische Schlagzeuger und Texter Neil Peart (Bild) ist am 7. Januar 2020 in Santa Monica (Kalifornien) gestorben. International bekannt wurde er als Mitglied der Rockband Rush. Das Musikmagazin "Rolling Stone" wählte ihn in der Liste "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time" zum viertbesten Drummer der Welt. Neil Peart und seine Rush-Bandkollegen Alex Lifeson und Geddy Lee wurden 2010 mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame geehrt. Knapp drei Jahre später wurden Rush auch in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

"It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his... battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma)," tweeted the official account for Rush, which was composed of Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.

One of the best rock drummers in history

Peart was seen as one of the industry's most technically proficient rock drummers. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer hall of fame in 1983, making him the youngest ever honouree. The former Police drummer Stewart Copeland called him "the most air-drummed-to drummer of all time".
