03.02.2020 Der am 12. Mai 1948 in Prag geborene tschechisch-amerikanische Komponist, Singersongwriter, Gitarrist, Bassgitarrist, Filmemacher und Musikproduzent Ivan Král (Bild) ist am 2. Februar 2020 gestorben. Seine Songs wurden u.a. von U2, Pearl Jam, Téléphone, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Simple Minds, First Aid Kit und John Waite interpretiert. Besonders bekannt wurde Král mit der Patti Smith Group.

In memoriam: Ivan Král

Ivan Král, a celebrated Prague-born musician, composer and producer who immigrated to the United States in the mid-1960s, died on Sunday at the age of 71. Early in his storied career, he played with Patti Smith, with whom he co-wrote 'Dancing Barefoot', named among the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. Král also wrote for rock icons such as Iggy Pop and David Bowie, while bands such as U2 and Pearl Jam have covered his songs.

After parting ways with Smith in late 1979, Král worked on Iggy Pop's 1980 album 'Soldier'. He subsequently became the co-writer and guitarist for all original compositions on Pop's follow-up record, 'Party'. The full-length also featured the single 'Bang Bang', which was notably covered by the late David Bowie on his 1987 album 'Never Let Me Down'.

Der schüchterne Rockstar

Král war ein hochproduktives Multitalent. Nach seinem Ausstieg aus Patti Smiths Band arbeitete er mit John Cale und Iggy Pop, drehte Rockdokumentarfilme, produzierte Bands wie die Vipers und lieferte den Soundtrack für Barry Levinsons Coming-of-Age-Komödie "Diner". Als die Samtene Revolution 1989 den Realsozialismus in der Tschechoslowakei hinwegfegte, kehrte der Musiker in seine Heimat zurück. Die Trauermusik, die er für die Beerdigung des Dichterpräsidenten Vaclav Hável komponierte, wurde 2011 live aus dem Prager Veitsdom ausgestrahlt.
