17.06.2018 Der am 29. Dezember 1929 in Sunflower (Mississippi) geborene US-amerikanische Blues-Gitarrist Matt Murphy (Bild) ist am 15. Juni 2018 gestorben. Er hat mit unzähligen Grössen von Muddy Waters bis Etta James gespielt. International bekannt wurde er durch seine Filmrolle in "Blues Brothers". Dort spielte er den Ehemann von Aretha Franklin, der von den Blues Brothers überzeugt wird, aus dem Ruhestand zurückzukehren. Murphy wurde zudem festes Mitglied der Blues Brothers Band, mit der er auch auf Tournee ging. "Der Filmauftritt und die Tourneen mit der Blues Brothers Band steigerten seinen Bekanntheitsgrad enorm" (Wikipedia).

Noted blues sideman performed with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon

Murphy is best remembered as the indispensable guitarist in the 1980 comedy classic The Blues Brothers; in the film, soul food chef Murphy and his waitress wife Aretha Franklin have a disagreement about him reuniting with the Blues Brothers, resulting in Franklin's iconic "Think" performance.

His first limelight stealing performance came in 1963 on the American Folk Blues Festival tour of Europe. As part of that tour which also included Muddy Waters, Lonnie Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Victoria Spivey, Willie Dixon, Murphy broke out a stellar presentation of "Matt's Guitar Boogie."

Im Laufe seiner musikalischen Karriere spielte er mit zahlreichen Größen des Blues, darunter Howlin' Wolf, Junior Parker, Ike Turner, James Cotton, Otis Rush, Etta James, Sonny Boy Williamson II., Chuck Berry und Joe Louis Walker. Mit Memphis Slim spielte er über einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren immer wieder zusammen. Murphy trat auch mit seiner eigenen Band, der Matt "Guitar" Murphy Band, auf.
