Der US-amerikanische Flötist Paul Horn ist gestorben

06.07.2014 Der am 17. März 1930 in New York City geborene US-amerikanische Jazzmusiker Paul Horn (Bild) ist am 29. Juni 2014 in Vancouver (Kanada) gestorben. Er spielte Querflöte, Sopransaxophon, Altsaxophon und Klarinette; er gilt als einer der Begründer der New-Age-Musik.

Als junger Jazz-Flötist spielte Horn ab den 1950er-Jahren in Kalifornien mit Musikgrößen wie Tony Bennett, Miles Davis und Frank Sinatra. Er wirkte an Grammy-prämierten Alben mit. Aufenthalte in Indien ab Mitte der 1960er-Jahre prägten seinen meditativen Stil. Unter anderem nahm er Flötenstücke im Taj Mahal auf, die später auf dem Album «Inside The Taj Mahal» veröffentlicht wurden. Auf Reisen durch Ägypten, China und Russland spielte der New-Age-Pionier an spirituellen Orten.

In his autobiographical book "Inside Paul Horn: The Spiritual Odyssey of a Universal Traveler," he wrote: "We are journeying externally from country to country. We are traveling in historical time, from the present to the distant past. We are traveling inwardly as well, through the music of meditation."

Primarily a flutist, Horn also played clarinet and saxophone. He recorded more than 50 albums during his career, beginning in the mid-1950s. His early works, which featured Horn on alto saxophone and flute, fell squarely into the bop and cool schools of jazz; Horn worked with such leaders as Cal Tjader and Chico Hamilton at the time. But in 1967, when he began studying Transcendental Meditation, Horn's style shifted to a more serene, spiritual one that often eschewed jazz qualities in favor of music that set peaceful, meditative moods. He is considered one of the seminal figures in what became the New Age music movement.
