Der US-amerikanische Jazz-Pianist und Crusaders-Bandleader Joe Sample ist gestorben

13.09.2014 Der am 1. Februar 1939 in Houston, Texas, geborene US-amerikanische Jazz-Pianist und Produzent Joe Sample (Bild) ist am 12. September 2014 ebendort gestorben. Sample war Gründungsmitglied der Fusion-Jazz-Gruppe The Crusaders.

Joe Sample war zeitlebens ein offener Geist, dessen Piano-, Arrangement- und Kompositionskünste von vielen grossen Kollegen hoch geschätzt wurden - von Miles Davis über George Benson bis zu B.B. King und Eric Clapton. Nicht zufällig hatte Sample neben den Crusaders auch eine sehr erfolgreiche Solo-Karriere. Er entwickelte dabei einen spezifischen Piano-Stil, der gerade auf dem Fender Rhodes E-Piano einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert hat. Sample klang immer funky und leicht.

Das funktionierte vor allem als Begleitung von Sängerinnen und Sängern bestens. Genau damit hatte Joe Sample auch seinen grössten Erfolg. Das Album «Street Life» von 1979 mit den Crusaders stürmte diverse Jazz- und Pop-Charts. Und vor allem der Titeltrack mit Randy Crawford wurde für Joe Sample zur Erkennungsmelodie, die auch Leute heute noch mitsummen können, die seinen Namen noch nie gehört haben.

Die Achtzigerjahre waren für Sample nicht leicht. "Der Jazz hatte seine Spiritualität verloren, und ich wurde ein Opfer der Musikindustrie. Meine damalige Plattenfirma war der Meinung, ich könnte nicht so weiterspielen wie bisher. Ich dachte, okay, warum begehe ich dann nicht gleich Selbstmord? Ich kann doch nichts anderes!", sagte Sample einmal in einem Interview mit dem KulturSPIEGEL. Nachdem die Verträge mit der Plattenfirma ausliefen, konnte Sample wieder die Songs aufnehmen, die ihm am Herzen lagen.

Sample began studying piano at age 5. In Houston, he was exposed to all types of music: gospel, soul, bebop, blues, Latin and classical. While studying music performance at Texas Southern University, he teamed up with his friends saxophonist Wilton Felder, drummer Stix Hooper, trombonist Wayne Henderson, and a few other musicians to form The Jazz Crusaders and later, just The Crusaders.

They never graduated, and moved from Houston to Los Angeles in the late 1950s to follow their musical aspirations. The Jazz Crusaders recorded their first album, Freedom Sound, in 1961 and released more than 40 before they disbanded in 1987. The ensemble originally played hard bop but "went electric" and began incorporating elements of soul and funk. In 1971, they dropped "jazz" from their name as they increasingly experimented with sounds and catchy grooves. Today, they are considered the fathers of jazz funk fusion.

Joe Sample, who spent more than five decades as a jazz pianist, keyboardist, and composer creating awe-inspiring music that transcended genres and inspired countless musicians, died on Friday, September 12 in Houston, TX. He was 75.

As a result of their unique fusion, The Crusaders had several top charting albums in the Jazz, R&B, and Pop categories, earning several #1 Billboard Top Jazz and Contemporary Jazz albums, including: Images, Street Life, The 2^nd Crusade, Southern Comfort, Free As The Wind, Rhapsody and Blues, and Healing The Wounds.

Outside of a three decade string of Crusaders' hits, Sample also worked as a solo act beginning in 1969 with Fancy Dance as a featured pianist and perhaps most prominently with the 1985 Top 10 Billboard Top Jazz Albums (#8), Oasis, the 1997 George Duke produced Billboard Top 5 Contemporary Jazz Album (#5), Sample This, and Sample's uber-successful 1993 #1 Billboard Top Jazz Album (#43 R&B/Hip Hop and #194 Billboard 200) charter, Invitation, produced by Tommy LiPuma. Throughout his career, Sample also frequently worked as well as an in-demand studio musician for such acts as: Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Joni Mitchell, Anita Baker, Kenny Burrell, and Minnie Ripperton, among others.
