In addition to Presley, among the artists who recorded Davis' compositions were Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, Tom Jones and Johnny Cash. But the Grammy nominee saved some of his best work for himself, scoring hits with "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me," which he took to No. 1  in 1972, as well as "Stop and Smell the Roses" and "Rock N Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life)."

Davis earned his first of three Grammy nods for writing "In the Ghetto"; it was nominated in 1969 in a category then known as best contemporary song. In 1972 he was nominated for male pop vocal performance with "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me"; in 1976 he competed for male country vocal performance with his "Forever Lovers" album.
