01.05.2015 Der am 28. September 1938 in Henderson (North Carolina) geborene US-amerikanische R&B- und Soul-Sänger Ben E. King (Bild) ist am 30. April 2015 in Teaneck (New Jersey) gestorben. Er wurde als Mitglied der Drifters bekannt und weltberühmt mit dem Song "Stand by Me" (1961).

Laut dem Urheberrechts-Unternehmen BMI steht «Stand by Me» an vierter Stelle der meistgespielten Songs im US-Radio und -Fernsehen im 20. Jahrhundert. Die US-Kongressbibliothek nahm das Lied kürzlich in ihr Verzeichnis «Amerikanischer Schätze» der Musik auf.

Der letzte Tanz von Ben E. King
1986 katapultierte Rob Reiners gleichnamiger Film «Stand By Me» ihn noch einmal auf vorderste Chart-Positionen. In den neunziger Jahren unternahm Ben E. King auch Ausflüge in den Jazz. Sein letztes Album datiert von 2006. Es erschien bei True Life Records und heisst «I've Been Around». Jetzt ist er nicht mehr unter uns.

King sang zunächst als Kind im Kirchenchor. Schon früh zog seine Familie in das Schwarzen-Ghetto Harlem in New York. Zunächst wurde King in den 50er Jahren als Sänger der Band The Drifters bekannt. Bekannte Songs von King mit den Drifters waren «There goes my Baby» (1959) und «Save the last Dance for me» (1960). Doch Streit um die Gage liess die Gruppe auseinanderbrechen.

Reached today by phone, songwriter Mike Stoller tells Rolling Stone news of King's death is "a real shocker." He recalls he and his songwriting partner Jerry Leiber were 26 years old when they met the young King in 1959 for their first session. "His voice was so warm, rich and mature for a 20-year-old guy," Stoller says.

Over his career, King had 21 songs crack the Billboard Hot 100, most notably the iconic 1961 single "Stand By Me." The U.S. Library of Congress added the classic to the National Recording Registry earlier this year, saying, "It was King's incandescent vocal that made it a classic."
Fellow musician Gary US Bonds wrote on Facebook that King was "one of the sweetest, gentlest and gifted souls that I have had the privilege of knowing and calling my friend for more than 50 years".
Soul singer with one of the most distinctive voices of his era
Ben E King appeared at a time when pop music was pausing for breath between the wakeup call sounded by the first generation of American rock'n'rollers and the blast of energy provided from across the water by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. His distinctive voice, shaped by the fervour of black church music but capable of a suavely seductive romanticism, was heard on such hits as Spanish Harlem and Stand By Me.
