16.10.2020 Der am 23. September 1940 in Maschhad (Iran) geborene iranische Sänger traditioneller persischer Musik und Komponist Mohammad-Reza Shajarian (Bild) ist am 8. Oktober 2020 in Teheran gestorben. Er galt als einer der bedeutendsten Sänger der persischen klassischen Musik im ausgehenden 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert ("Pars Times"). Das iranische Regime verbot ihm nach 2009 jegliche Auftritte und Tonaufnahmen; erst nach seinem Tod spielte das iranische Staatsfernsehen seine Musik erstmals wieder nach elf Jahren.*

Shajarian was widely praised not just for decades of memorable songs he performed at various junctures of Iran's contemporary history, but for siding with people at difficult times like the 2009 post-election protests.
He was under an unofficial ban up until his death at Tehran's Jam Hospital.

Legend of Iranian music
Mohammad Reza Shajarian was a legend and a living monument of Iranian traditional music. He was also known for his skills in Persian calligraphy. At early age, he began studying the traditional classical Radif. Radif of Iranian music is registered on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage for Humanity in 2009.
Mohammad Reza Shajarian received UNESCO Picasso medal and Mozart medal, as a recognition of his unparraled talent, and commitment to artistic freedom. Shajarian who is one of the most celebrated world music artists, is widely considered the embodiment of the perfect singer and a major source of inspiration to other musicians. His singing is widely believed to be technically flawless, powerful, and strongly emotional.
He was also awarded with the France's Chevalier of the Legion of Honor which is the highest decoration awarded by the French government, in June 2014.
His famous religious performance of "Rabbanaa ربّنا " prayer was registered on National Intangible Cultural Heritage List of I.R. of Iran in 2017.

Nach der Nachricht seines Todes versammelten sich Tausende IranerInnen noch in der Nacht auf den Strassen Teherans und trauerten um den populären Sänger.
