Ms. Jones sang and shouted the kind of gospel-charged soul and funk she had grown up on. Her voice had bite, bluesiness, rhythmic savvy and a lifetime of conviction. She was backed by the Dap-Kings, the revivalist New York City R&B band that supplied her songs as she sparked their career.

The group's last album, the holiday compilation It's a Holiday Soul Party, was released in 2015. Speaking to Rolling Stone earlier this year, Jones expressed interest in recording a gospel album with the Dap-Kings, repeating her mantra, "I have cancer; cancer don't have me."

Although she had been a singer for much of her life, Jones only became known later in her life. She didn't release her first album until 1996, when she was 40, after being noticed working as a back-up singer on an album by Lee Fields. It was only in this century, though, that she started to receive serious attention, fronting Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
