Ein stiller Revolutionär

Mit seinen federnden, von Pathos und blossem Schönklang-Denken befreiten Interpretationen sorgte Neville Marriner für eine Stil- und Zeitenwende in der Musik.

Sir Neville Marriner obituary

On the strength of what he had achieved by his early 30s, Sir Neville Marriner, who has died aged 92, would have been remembered as a decent orchestral and chamber music violinist. But at 34 he made a brilliant career move that led to his becoming one of the world's best-known conductors. His chamber orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, not only inaugurated a fashion for long-winded ensemble titles, but shot straight to the top of its class, beating the Germans and Italians at their own game. To achieve this feat in Britain, a land not noted for its string playing, was extraordinary.

Marriner, a violinist in the London Symphony Orchestra, joined with several other musicians in 1959 to form a chamber group, which was intended to perform without a leader. The group's mouthful of a name, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, was inspired by the church in central London where they performed.

"The name was chosen without much thinking because, when we started, we never thought we would even get off the ground," Marriner once said. "And then we were stuck with it."

For energy and output, Marriner had few equals. He made more than 600 recordings of 2,000 musical works, a greater legacy than any conductor except Karajan. These included the soundtrack for Milos Forman's film of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, which introduced more new listeners to classical music than any film since Fantasia.

"It's the sound of the Academy that made it celebrated around the world," Mr. Marriner reflected in an interview he gave to the Guardian newspaper for his 90th birthday in 2014. "We wanted some clarity in the texture and vitality in the tempi. Early music at that time had been slow, thick, cloudy and taken very seriously, like an ancient relic."
