22.05.2020 Der am 29. März 1950 in Albadania bei Kissidougou geborene guineische Griot, Sänger und Musiker Mory Kanté (Bild) ist am 22. Mai 2020 in Conakry (Guinea) gestorben. Seine ersten Erfolge feierte er mit der Rail Band of Bamako (Mali). Mit dem in Paris aufgenommenen Lied "Yé ké yé ké" und dem Album "Akwaba Beach" gelang ihm ab 1987 der weltweite Durchbruch. Mory Kanté zählte zu den wichtigsten Repräsentanten von Worldmusic und Ethno-Pop.

Lignée familiale de griots
Mory Kanté est issu d'une longue lignée de griots et de cantatrices mandingues. Ses parents l'ont poussé à apprendre à jouer du balafon et de la kora, deux instruments traditionnels de l'Afrique de l'Ouest.

As a solo artist, he released 13 studio albums. The last, N'Diarabi, was released in 2017. In 2014, he recorded Africa Stop Ebola alongside artists including Amadou & Mariam, Salif Keïta and Oumou Sangaré. It sold 250,000 copies, raising money for Médicins Sans Frontières.
Speaking to the Guardian in 2004, he said he would like to be remembered "as a man of culture, as a citizen of the world who delivers his messages in music, and as a tireless traveller looking to meet and know the people of this world".

Mory Kanté: African music star dies aged 70
Born in a famous family of "griots" - West African musicians and storytellers - he had been nicknamed "the electronic griot", and was known as a distinguished player of kora - a West African harp.
His song Yéké Yéké became a huge hit in the late 1980s and was widely remixed.
The president of Guinea, Alpha Condé, said on Twitter that African culture was in mourning. He thanked Kanté, saying his career had been "exceptional".
