Although the band's roots lay in the blues, their 1964 hit "Go Now" was a foretaste of the lush, orchestral sound that came to be called progressive rock.

Their 1967 album "Days of Future Passed" is a prog-rock landmark, and Thomas's flute solo on the single "Nights in White Satin" one of its defining moments.

Multi-instrumentalist contributed to all of Rock Hall-inducted prog rock band's albums until 2002 retirement

Moody Blues bassist John Lodge tweeted Sunday, "Ray and I have been on this magical journey through life together since we were 14... two young kids from Birmingham who reached for the stars...and we made it together. El Riot you will always be by my side." Thomas and Lodge played together in their band El Riot and the Rebels in the early Sixties.

Ray Thomas is, along with Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Men at Work's Greg Ham, and Mel Collins and Ian McDonald of King Crimson, one of a handful of well-known flute players in rock music -- the main difference is that he was there first, as a founding member of the Moody Blues in the early '60s, and as a singer and songwriter within the band.
