B.B. King war nach T-Bone Walker und Lowell Fulson einer der ersten Gitarristen, der den Blues auf der elektrischen Gitarre spielte. Mit seinem unverkennbaren Sound und Stil beeinflusste er unzählige spätere Blues- und Rockgitarristen. Als stimmgewaltiger Sänger entwickelte er mit seinem Gospel-Feeling den ursprünglich schlichten ländlichen Folk- oder Country-Blues zum jazzigen, swingenden, bläsergeprägten «Urban Blues».

Am besten war B. B. King immer dann, wenn er die satte Routine durchbrach. Zum Glück gelang ihm das auch im Alter noch. Keines seiner Alben ist ohne Meriten, und auch in den Schunkelpartys, zu denen seine späten Konzerte oft gerieten, sah man immer wieder in den Abgrund, aus dem der Blues kommt und von dem "Lucille" zu erzählen wusste wie niemand sonst.

Am 14. Mai ist Riley B. King in seinem Haus in Las Vegas verstorben. Als B.B. King allerdings hat er längst jene Unsterblichkeit erreicht, die nur den größten Künstlern vorbehalten ist.

This morning, I come to you all with a heavy heart.
B.B. King was the greatest guy I ever met. The tone he got out of that guitar, the way he shook his left wrist, the way he squeezed the strings ... man, he came out with that and it was all new to the whole guitar playin' world. He could play so smooth, he didn't have to put on a show. The way BB did it is the way we all do it now. He was my best friend and father to us all.
