Guitarist John Abercrombie, a supremely eloquent and lyrical player whose career over the last four decades included seminal jazz fusion music and eminently refined ECM albums alike, died Tuesday of heart failure. He was 72.

Abercrombie was an influential guitar stylist who, after getting his start as a session musician and sideman with artists like Gato Barbieri, Billy Cobham, and Gil Evans, came into prominence as a bandleader in the 1970s through his recordings on the ECM label. His debut album, Timeless, is particularly renowned, featuring synth/organist Jan Hammer (of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miami Vice soundtrack fame) and Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett collaborator Jack DeJohnette on drums.

An alum of the Berklee College of Music, Abercrombie became hugely influential within the jazz fusion genre through his recordings for the ECM label.

Albums like 1975's Timeless - which Abercrombie recorded with Jack DeJohnette and keyboardist Jan Hammer - would come to define the label's groundbreaking sound.

Aside from his dozens of recordings as a band leader, Abercrombie was for decades also a frequent member of the highly regarded trio Gateway, along with DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland.

Abercrombie sei es immer um ein harmonisches und flexibles Spiel mit anderen Musikern gegangen, sagte Pianist Marc Copland, der über fast 50 Jahre immer wieder mit Abercrombie gespielt hatte, dem «Ottawa Citizen». «Wie seine Musik suchte John nie aggressiv das Rampenlicht, er versuchte einfach, die bestmögliche Musik zu machen», sagte Copland.

Mort du guitariste John Abercrombie

Dans les années 1980, comme d'autres guitaristes, il avait expérimenté le jeu sur une guitare-synthétiseur, avant de revenir à des instruments électriques plus traditionnels. A sa technique fluide, au délié des notes, dans la contruction de savantes parties solistes, il ajoutait une maîtrise de quelques effets sonores, principalement de réverbération et de vibrato.
