Muhal Richard Abrams, 87, Individualistic Pianist and Composer, Is Dead

Muhal Richard Abrams, the autodidactic pianist, composer and educator who was known both for his diverse, unclassifiable compositions and improvisations and for establishing and sustaining the influential Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan.

Der umtriebige und vielseitige Musiker, der sich auch um musikalische Didaktik kümmerte, brachte (...) regelmässig neue Alben heraus - Musik für grössere Ensembles, aber auch solistische Werke. In den Nuller-Jahren trat Abrams noch mehrmals in Europa auf; 2008 gab er auch ein Solokonzert am Zürcher Jazzfestival «unerhört». Am letzten Sonntag ist der «Grand Old Man» der Chicagoer Avantgarde 87-jährig gestorben.

Né en 1930 à Chicago, Muhal Richard Abrams accompagnera pendant longtemps les grands du jazz comme Miles et Rollins, de passage dans sa ville. Ce musicien connu comme pianiste, mais capable de jouer aussi d'un grand nombre d'instruments, fondera ensuite l'A.A.C.M (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) dont il sera le premier président.
