Chuck Berry, who with his indelible guitar licks, brash self-confidence and memorable songs about cars, girls and wild dance parties did as much as anyone to define rock 'n' roll's potential and attitude in its early years, died on Saturday. He was 90.

"Thou Shall Have No Other Rock Gods Before Him," the drummer and producer Questlove wrote. "His lyrics shone above others & threw a strange light on the American dream," said Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. "Chuck you were amazing [and] your music is engraved inside us forever."

Chuck Berry's trademark four-bar guitar introduction and quickfire lyrics reflected the rebelliousness of the youth of the 1950s.

Chuck Berry, der mit Songs wie "Johnny B. Goode" berühmt wurde, prägte die Jugendkultur in den 1950er-Jahren massgeblich mit. Er gehörte zu den ersten Musikern, die 1986 in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen wurden.

Zu seinen frühen Erfolgen zählen unter anderem Lieder wie "Sweet Little Sixteen" und "Roll Over Beethoven". Seinen ersten Nummer-Eins-Hit hatte er 1972 mit "My Dingeling".

Tatsächlich ist Berry von allen Gründervätern des Rock 'n' Roll derjenige, der mehr als jeder andere schulbildend in die Zukunft gewirkt hat: Bill Haley, Little Richard, Fats Domino und sogar Elvis haben nicht so viele Nachahmer gehabt wie er.
