Gregg Allman, Southern Rock Pioneer, Dead at 69

Although Allman claimed the term was redundant, the singer-keyboardist helped create the first great "Southern-rock" group as co-founder of the legendary Allman Brothers Band alongside his older brother, famed guitarist Duane Allman. The Allmans fused country blues with San Francisco-style extended improvisation, with their sound creating a template for countless subsequent jam bands. Gregg Allman was blessed with one of blues-rock's great growling voices and, along with his Hammond B-3 organ playing (beholden to Booker T. Jones), had a deep emotional power.

Gregg Allman, the soulful singer-songwriter and rock n' blues pioneer who founded The Allman Brothers Band with his late brother, Duane, and composed such classics as "Midnight Rider," "Melissa" and the epic concert jam "Whipping Post," has died at age 69, Billboard has learned.

The band's lead singer and keyboardist, Mr. Allman was one of the principal architects of a taut, improvisatory fusion of blues, jazz, country and rock that - streamlined by inheritors like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band - became the Southern rock of the 1970s.

With Allman as the frontman, Duane on slide guitar and not one but two drummers, the group was a kinetic live band, often improvising versions of songs like "Midnight Rider," "Whipping Post" and "Stormy Monday." Tinged with country and owing allegiance to Southern black blues, their music sounded as if it had bloomed from bogs and red clay. Allman's voice matured with sadness, scowl, heartbreak and roadhouse redemption.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Allman was raised in Florida with his older brother and fellow band member Duane by a single mother, after his father was shot dead. In a 2015 interview with the Guardian, he said he "learned to play mostly from black people: the clubs on Daytona Beach, Surf Bar, Paradise, all black dudes."

"We used to listen to a station that called itself 'the black spot on your dial'," he added. "It played Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, and it hit Duane and me like spaghetti hitting a wall.
