Phil Woods gilt schon früh als Nachfolger der Bebop-Grösse Charlie Parker. Seine eigene Sprache findet er in Paris mit George Gruntz, und zur Jazz-Legende wird er dank seines Solos für Billy Joel in «Just the Way You Are». Nun ist der 83-jährige Saxophonist seiner Lungenkrankheit erlegen.

Alto saxophone giant and NEA Jazz Master Phil Woods, an unrepentant bebopper who parlayed a love for the music of Charlie Parker into a six-decade career as a highly respected leader and first-call sideman, died today, Sept. 29, in East Stroudsburg, Pa., at age 83.

Fluent and creative saxophonist regarded as one of the world's leading jazz soloists

Woods also took his role as a teacher very seriously, helping to found an annual arts festival in Delaware, and regularly taking masterclasses and musician-in-residence roles with student jazz bands around the world, including the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in Britain, and the Catania City Brass Orkestra in Italy. Woods would frequently take the featured-soloist role in these enterprises, performing as if there were nothing in the world he would rather be doing.

Upon receiving the nation's highest jazz honor, Woods said, "Jazz will never perish, it's forever music, and I like to think that my music is somewhere in there and will last, maybe not forever, but may influence others."
