ZUM TOD VON ARETHA FRANKLIN

16.08.2018 Die am 25. März 1942 in Memphis (Tennessee) geborene US-amerikanische Soul-Sängerin, Songwriterin und Pianistin Aretha Franklin (Bild) ist am 16. August 2018 in Detroit (Michigan) gestorben.

Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, Dead at 76

For more than five decades, Franklin was a singular presence in pop music, a symbol of strength, women's liberation and the civil rights movement. Franklin, one of the greatest singers of all time, died Thursday of pancreatic cancer, according to her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn.

Aretha Franklin, Legendary 'Queen of Soul,' Dies at Age 76

During a career spanning six decades, Franklin's soaring, gospel-nurtured mezzo-soprano became the benchmark by which soulful singing is still measured. Equally at home singing jazz, blues and classical, the versatile 18-time Grammy Award winner influenced a host of next-generation artists ranging from Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill to Beyoncé, Fantasia and Kelly Clarkson.

In Memoriam: Aretha Franklin (1942-2018)

She was the little girl who would be queen. Graced with a huge voice and even more powerful spirit, Aretha Franklin claimed her throne as the dominant female vocalist of her generation and a beloved cultural heroine.

Long after she had become a popular success, Franklin continued to maintain a foothold in the jazz world; she appeared occasionally at the galas surrounding the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, and at the 2016 International Jazz Day concert at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Say A Little Prayer

As far as monikers go, 'Lady Soul' may well have proved a heavy load to bear for many artists. Yet Aretha Franklin, who has died at the age of 76, became the unimpeachable incumbent, the absolute personification of the genre of music that flowered from black America and grew around the whole world.

One of America's greatest singers in any style

Gospel shaped her quivering swoops, her pointed rasps, her galvanizing buildups and her percussive exhortations; it also shaped her piano playing and the call-and-response vocal arrangements she shared with her backup singers. Through her career in pop, soul and R&B, Ms. Franklin periodically recharged herself with gospel albums: "Amazing Grace" in 1972 and "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism," recorded at the New Bethel church, in 1987.

"What a legacy!"

Her final live performance was at a gala event for Elton John's Aids foundation, in November 2017. John posted a tribute on Instagram, saying: "The loss of Aretha Franklin is a blow for everybody who loves real music: Music from the heart, the soul and the Church. Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated - she was one of my favourite pianists."

Carole King, who co-wrote Franklin's classic song (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, said on Twitter: "What a life. What a legacy! So much love, respect and gratitude." Paul McCartney called her "the Queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many many years".
