Brink was a leading member of the Sestigers, a group of independent-minded Afrikaans writers who clashed repeatedly with the establishment.

His works were repeatedly banned, and he was an outspoken critic of censorship, which he said was being used in South Africa not to protect religious or moral beliefs but as an extension of a repressive political apparatus.

Brink wrote: "If I speak of my people then I mean: every person black, coloured or white, who shares my country and my loyalty towards my country."

BBC correspondent Fergal Keane described Brink as a "brave" novelist, whose books had had "a huge impact on me when I began reporting SA in the 1980s and ever since".

Mr. Brink's work was often cited alongside that of Nadine Gordimer and J. M. Coetzee as an exemplar of South Africa's ability to transform the experience of harsh racial politics into literature with a global reach.
