13.01.2017 Der am 7. Januar 1928 in New York City geborene US-amerikanische Autor und Regisseur William Peter Blatty (Bild) ist am 12. Januar 2017 in Bethesda (Maryland) gestorben. Weltweit bekannt wurde Blatty durch seinen Roman "Der Exorzist" aus dem Jahre 1971, für dessen Verfilmung er auch das Drehbuch verfasste.

Seinen Durchbruch hatte er 1959 mit dem Buch Which Way to Mecca, Jack?. In den 1960er-Jahren arbeitete William mit dem Regisseur Blake Edwards zusammen und schrieb für dessen Filme wie u. a. Was hast du denn im Krieg gemacht, Pappi? (What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?) die Geschichten. Seinen weltweiten Ruhm jedoch verdankt er seinem Buch Der Exorzist, das 1973 erfolgreich verfilmt wurde. An der 1977 erschienenen Kino-Fortsetzung war Blatty nicht beteiligt. 1983 verfasste er mit Das Zeichen (Legion) die Fortsetzung der Originalstory und 1990 entstand Der Exorzist III, welcher auf Das Zeichen (Legion) basiert und von Blatty persönlich inszeniert wurde.

"The Exorcist," the story of a 12-year-old girl possessed by the Devil, was published in 1971 and sold more than 13 million copies. The 1973 movie version, starring Linda Blair and directed by William Friedkin, was a runaway hit, breaking box-office records at many theaters and becoming the highest-grossing film to date for Warner Bros. studios.
Blatty, who claimed the screenwriting Oscar for The Exorcist at the 46th Academy Awards, wrote the novel of the same name in 1971. The film version, which he also produced, was nominated for 10 Oscars, including best picture, but won just two trophies.
"Over the years, I understand that people consider it a horror film, and that's where it lives in the public consciousness," Friedkin wrote about The Exorcist in a 2013 essay for The Hollywood Reporter. "But it has never been that to Blatty or myself."

After the success of the book and film of The Exorcist, Blatty reworked Twinkle, Twinkle, "Killer" Kane! into a new book called The Ninth Configuration in 1978. He adapted, directed and produced a film version two years later. A meditation on God's existence, the film was described as "the finest large-scale American surrealist film ever made" by Peter Travers in People magazine. It was nominated for three Golden Globes in 1981 and won the best writing award against The Elephant Man, Ordinary People and Raging Bull.
