Neil Simon war einer der populärsten Dramatiker der Vereinigten Staaten. Seine leichten Komödien haben durch ihre Verfilmungen und ihre Übersetzungen in zahlreiche Sprachen weltweiten Erfolg. Simon galt als Autor für das so genannte Boulevardtheater.

In addition to his four Oscar nominations and 17 Tony nominations, Simon's works brought an unsurpassed 50 Tony nominations for their actors. His competitive Tony wins came for "The Odd Couple" (best playwright) and for best play for "Lost in Yonkers" and "Biloxi Blues."
Beginning in the 1960s, Simon could guarantee good Broadway advance sales, a rare feat for a writer. He had more than 30 plays mounted on Broadway, including four that ran simultaneously in 1966: "Sweet Charity," "The Star-Spangled Girl," "The Odd Couple" and "Barefoot in the Park."

Time magazine proclaimed him the "patron saint of laughter." His shows, with an arsenal of sarcastic wit, became highly entertaining staples of high school and community theaters, and they popped up on stages as far away as Beijing and Moscow. But mostly, he dominated Broadway like no other playwright of the past half-century.

Die Zeitung "New York Times" würdigte Simon als "Theater-Autor, dessen Name synonym mit Broadway-Komödien und Erfolg war" und der dazu beigetragen habe, "den amerikanischen Humor neu zu definieren".
Simon bekam in seiner Karriere Golden Globes, Emmys, Tonys und einen Pulitzer Preis und sammelte dazu mehr Nominierungen ein als jeder andere Dramatiker. 1983 wurde sogar ein ganzes Broadway-Theater nach ihm benannt.

He was also a prolific author of screenplays, including successful adaptations of The Odd Couple and Barefoot in the Park. A standard Broadway joke had it that only William Shakespeare wrote more hit plays.
