"We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives."

Novelist and 1993 Literature Laureate Toni Morrison has passed away aged 88.

Morrison's works revolve around African-Americans; both their history and their situation in our own time. Her works often depict difficult circumstances and the dark side of humanity, but still convey integrity and redemption. The way she reveals the stories of individual lives conveys insight into, understanding of, and empathy for her characters.

What Toni Morrison said about Trump supporters and fears of the 'collapse of white privilege'

Nobel laureate Toni Morrison won global acclaim for her ability to tell the story of the black American experience - and specifically the damaging effects of racism - when few authors with national platforms were addressing the issue.

In her 1993 Nobel address, Ms. Morrison said: "The vitality of language lies in its ability to limn the actual, imagined and possible lives of its speakers, readers, writers. Although its poise is sometimes in displacing experience it is not a substitute for it. It arcs toward the place where meaning may lie."

"Her narratives and mesmerising prose have made an indelible mark on our culture"

Her long-time editor, Robert Gottlieb from Knopf publishers, said: "She was a great woman and a great writer, and I don't know which I will miss more."

And Sonny Mehta, the chairman of Knopf, said: "I can think of few writers in American letters who wrote with more humanity or with more love for language than Toni.

In novels including Beloved and The Bluest Eye, acclaimed author dramatised African-American experience with fierce passion

Margaret Atwood called Morrison a "giant of her times and ours .... That her strong voice will now be missing in this age of the renewed targeting of minorities in the United States and elsewhere is a tragedy for the rest of us."
