ZUM TOD DES LITERATUR-NOBELPREISTRÄGERS V.S. NAIPAUL

11.08.2018 Der am 17. August 1932 in Chaguanas (Trinidad und Tobago) geborene Schriftsteller V. S. Naipaul ist am 11. August 2018 in London gestorben. Im Jahr 2001 hatte er den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhalten. Seit 1950 lebte Naipaul in England.

In awarding him the Nobel prize for literature in 2001, the Swedish Academy said he was being honoured "for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories".

Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, a Nobel laureate born in Trinidad, published more than 30 books over five decades, ranging from comic novels set in Trinidad and Tobago to memoir and travel writing.

His 1961 novel, A House for Mr Biswas, is seen by many critics as his most important works. The book was based on the life of his father Seepersad, who was a reporter for the Trinidad Guardian.

In an extraordinary career spanning half a century, the writer traveled as a self-described "barefoot colonial" from rural Trinidad to upper class England, picked up the most coveted literary awards and a knighthood, and was hailed as one of the greatest English writers of the 20th century.

Naipaul erhielt 1971 den Booker Prize für seinen Roman In einem freien Land, 1983 den Jerusalempreis für die Freiheit des Individuums in der Gesellschaft, 1989 das Trinity Cross, 1993 den erstmals vergebenen David Cohen Prize und 2001 den Literaturnobelpreis für sein Gesamtwerk. Im Dezember 1989 wurde er von der britischen Königin als Knight Bachelor mit dem Titel Sir in den Adelsstand erhoben. 1990 wurde er in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt.

Naipaul sei friedlich in seinem Haus in London gestorben, teilte seine Frau der Agentur PA mit. «Er war ein Riese in allem, was er erreicht hat, und er starb in Kreis seiner geliebten Menschen, nachdem er ein Leben voll wunderbarer Kreativität und Streben gelebt hatte», heisst es in einer Erklärung von Lady Naipaul.
